hey the winter beater is ill, can someone confirm my diagnosis, here what it does, you'll start it up and it will be normal, youll keep driving and still no heat, but the temp gauge shows its warm, still no heat and the temp is rising very fast then instantly the heat kicks in and the temp goes down to normal, then it does this all over again, havent drivin sinse I got it home, my guess is the thermostat is bunk and its closing and opening, and its full on coolent so yeah any suggestions b/4 i use my one free ride to the parts store, also when the heats goes off its goes cold like ice cold, no warmth at all, also fyi this is a 93 tauras3.8 so if this could be head gasket related chime in at will, iv been expecting that one for awhile now but its hasnt showed its ugly head... yet... thanx for all help offerd - Bill R-

We didnt see anyother signs of it aside from the fluctuating heat. I'm guessing its probably just a small enough leak to put an air pocket in the system...

bleed the cooling system?? you've probably already done that.

how do you bleed the cooling system, also so whats my next move, im guessing dont drive it, order soem gaskets and 2 new reman heads, tear the olds ones out, bring them in have them pressure tested, replace as need and call it a day?

ya know.. run the car with the radiator cap off so all the air leaves the system while filling it up with more coolant. And I'd try the thermostat before you rush into doing the head gasket.

Give Casey a call., he can probably diagnose it better than me.

well this weekend was a waist of life, this whole thing has snowballed in to a god damn nightmare, well doing both head gaskets i decide while im in this pile I might as well do some other shit, well so far this shit includes but is not limited to water pump, timing cover gasket wich comes with the added bonus of removing the oil pan and starter, all this plus some o2 sensors, plug's wires, cap, rotor. Im not sure but I dont beleave there is a singal gasket that is left, other then the transmission stuff

The front cover is a very good idea to do. They are prone to failing nearly as much as the head gaskets. And when they do, they typicaly leak coolant into the oil.

The oil pan on those is pretty cake to do actualy. Just make sure you take the dipstick out, so that you dont pinch it between the pan and the block. Also make sure your reinstall the oil dip stick tube before installing the pan. They are prone to breaking off, and you have to pull the pan to get the broken portion out of the block... I would also install the oil pan last. This gives anyting you may acidently drop a place to fall out of. Also makes sure that you have a totaly clean oiling system when you reassembled.

I would change oil after 100 miles or so, just to make sure that you get any coolant/debris out of the motor that may have been in
some of the oil galleries.

Im hoping they arent cracked, im guessing there warped , the guy at the machine shop said they almost always are, but he also said they rairly crack so he didnt see a need to pressure check there just gona look for cracks and clean them and vacume check the valves, and check for warpage, does this sound right casey? also how do you tell if the gaskets were blown? on each head one of the cyclenders had this thing happen on the gasket, the metal ring on the inside had a small crack and was pushed out in the combustion chamber, so there was a small part that was out of round on the gasket, dirrectly behind these the gasket was messed up, is this because there is alot of tourqe there and it just got messed up when i took the head of or is this what happens when there blown

thats exactly what happens when they blow. The metal fire ring gets pushed into the combustion chamber, and then combustion burns the gasket material behind it. This alows coolant to flow into the combustion chamber. Im guessing it was on the last cylinder on each side.

My sweet lord you are good, well couldnt pull the timing cover last night as the rear bolts for the Y pipe were rust/welded on, so tonight my friend is bring over a grinder, when that is down Im gona put a new seal on the cover and put it back, clean up the oil pan area and put the ac compressor back on and wait for the heads wich by the way were both warped 6/1000? or 6/100 not sure but he said something about the gasket can take up to 4 but 6 is to much so those will both be resurfaced today hopfully, this reminds me why I love the fox stang, I could pull my motor put it in and to it again in the time it took me to get this thing apart.
