go on tire rack and read the reveiws, and customer coments, you find alot out about the tire that way.

Yeah, some of those reviews are nothing to me because I honestly don't trust the opinion of most of the people who write them.

The Nitto 555's @ 40 lbs work very nice for the stang. I have the 275/40's and they look good besides working in dry or wet conditions. Using the same set I ran down at MAM which is much faster.

These and BF goodrich G-force T/A's are the best as far as street tires go.

If you wanna talk about r compounds thats another story entirely. There are two sub categories of DOT R tires. Treaded tires (ie Victoracers, pilot sport cups, AO32's) and DOT slicks (Kumho V710's, Hooisers)

You thinking of getting a dedicated set of autoX tires? Or just upgrading what you've already got?

hmm I'm seeing a lot of different categories here.

my question is......You've got your regular treaded tires, then on the opposite side you have slicks. Cross between the two = Drag Radials. Is there a cross between regular tread and Drag Radials? Even if nittos DO technically have tread I dont think its a great idea to have them on my daily driver which I'm forced to drive in the rain...so I'm trying to find the best of both worlds without any downside pretty much, lol.

Ive found that my Nitto DRs worked great in the rain. Even in the near bald
state that they are in now.
I dont think there is a tire between radials and Drag radials except maybe a regular (non DR) Nitto 555 or just a good performance street tire.

....either way this thread is about auto-X tires

I think you need to assess whether or not you're planning on driving to the autox or not.

If you dont mind the classing, just get yourself a set of Kumho VictoRacers.. anything R-Comp from them is a great tire. Hoosier auto-x racing compound.. mmm

For street tires that handle well, I am running Eagle F1 GS-D3s. They have great roadhandling and do net get greasy like my Kumho Ecsta Supra 712s. The Ecsta MX is NOT a bad tire. It is made for high-performance situations. I think you guys need to get past the "kumho" brand name stereotype.

Victo V710s pwn! Even though their life expectancy is less than the V700.

StangerJon

kumho 712's suck balls.

I would not recommend those tires to anyone trying to do any sort of perf. driving.

victo racers are good though. from what I hear, I have never run them though.

Look into these tires. Top autocross drivers use them all over the country, ive heard some F1 drivers even use them.

Haha, I just did it again. "My name is Jon and if I modify this post I will be sodomized by a hot curling iron."

Lol, I just read this comment: "these tires stink i almost got killed today from them on brand new car... all the do is spin in the rain.. had regatta 2 tires on old buick and they were excellent .. these just plain ----:("

haha god damn that is some funny shit right there

lol @ last post

Anyways, I figured my advice would be valuable here, since I have put in quite a bit of autox time on my current Ecsta MX tires. I previously ran the Sumitomo HTR III tires on the same wheels, and the Kumhos seem to have a bit more give in the sidewall, but everything else, they are great. Great stickiness, great treadwear. Expect to run more pressure in the front to keep the sidewalls under control, and less in the back to take advantage of their bite. They double great on the street too, excellent in rain and for general highway driving. So there is the scoop on the ecsta MX.

And to sum it all up, they can't hold a candle to the tires my brother suggested, and uses. The Dunlop SP Super Sport tires are ungodly for street tires, I have no idea why they are not classified as R compound, because they act just like it. If you do not want to run victos for your application, get the Dunlops. They are usable in the rain, but not the greatest.

If you can't run the Dunlops for some reason, then run the Ecsta MX. I have also tried out almost all the comprable brands on different wheels, but they were on 15s, so not sure if it was an unfair comparison or not (difference in sidewall), but for that level of tire, the Kumho Ecsta MX gets my vote, again, if you cannot run the Dunlops due to wheel size issues.

only come in 18's now.

Availability varies. Tirerack stocks 17" sizes from time to time, but it is kind of a hit or miss thing. If you want the Dunlops, and have 17" wheels, just keep checking back with them. Otherwise, there may be other avenues, but I don't know since I have never needed to look for tires other than 18".

Those falken Azenis' do work very well and are really cheap for how well they hold their grip, only downside is they come in 17in. and below but im sure most people don't run anything larger than a 17 at an auto-x anyways.

I ran the Nitto 55rII on my firebird and on my vette. Drove them to and from events many times. They come up to temp fast (which you guys are missing; unless you are rtunning tire warmers in between runs) stick great, and can be driven to and from. Tire rack sells them competitively priced. Keep in mind, what ever tires you decide on if you end up with an "r" compund, make sure to dial in some more negative camber and maybe even a little toe out in the front. The toe out will really help with turn in.

I still say go w/ Piloet Sport Cups if you want insane grip while still being street legal.
